“Fresh off the Boat” creator Nahnatchka Khan said, “From concept to execution, Shine more than delivered. They killed it.”
Shine designed and animated the main title for Fox and ABC’s new comedy “Fresh off the Boat.” The sequence graphically portrays the family’s road trip in their mini van, moving from Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida in 1995. The sequence features a theme song by rap artist Danny Brown.
Fresh Off the Boat follows the Huang family as they move from Washington, D.C., to Orlando in the 1990s. Eddie, the eldest son, navigates life as a Taiwanese-American teenager while his family adjusts to suburban life. His father, Louis, runs a steakhouse, and his mother, Jessica, strives to maintain their cultural identity. The sitcom explores their humorous struggles with fitting in, balancing tradition and assimilation, and pursuing the American Dream with heart and comedy.
"Fresh Off the Boat" is a sitcom that aired on ABC, based on the memoir of Eddie Huang. The show follows the Huang family, Taiwanese immigrants adjusting to life in 1990s suburban Orlando, Florida. Led by patriarch Louis, who runs a Western-themed steakhouse, and his pragmatic wife Jessica, the family navigates cultural clashes, identity issues, and the challenges of raising three boys in a predominantly white neighborhood. With humor and heart, "Fresh Off the Boat" explores themes of family, cultural assimilation, and the pursuit of the American Dream, offering a fresh perspective on the Asian-American experience in a relatable and entertaining way.
The Shine typically begins with storyboards. Sometimes they're hand drawn, other times they're more articulate.
Footage of the characters traveling from D.C. to Orlando was used to tell the story through a mix of live action and graphic animation.
