stereoscopic 3D theatrical animated logo

STUDIO

MGM

Shine was chosen to redesign and animate the logo in stereoscopic 3-D. This is the first time in the company’s 88-year history that the MGM logo and its lion mascot have been created in 3-D stereo. To add dimension, Shine modeled a close up of Leo’s eye creating an element to pull back through for a dramatic reveal of the lion, laurels and filmstrip. All the elements of the logo were re-built in 3-D, and then placed on different planes to add dimensional layers and drama.

an iconic Hollywood design

The MGM logo, featuring the iconic roaring lion, was introduced in 1924 by Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Created by Howard Dietz, the logo originally depicted a silent lion, Slats, encircled by the studio's motto "Ars Gratia Artis" (Art for Art's Sake). The first roaring lion, Jackie, was introduced in 1928, synchronized with the dawn of sound in film. Over the years, several lions, including Tanner, George, and Leo, have appeared in the logo. Leo, the current lion, has been used since 1957. The MGM logo is a symbol of cinematic history and Hollywood's Golden Age, representing the studio's legacy of film excellence.
