main title sequence for Fox & ABC

Show creator Nahnatchka Khan said, “From concept to execution, Shine more than delivered. They killed it.”

Shine designed and animated the main title for Fox and ABC’s new comedy “Fresh off the Boat.” The sequence graphically portrays the family’s road trip in their mini van, moving from Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida in 1995. The sequence features a theme song by rap artist Danny Brown.

Fresh Off the Boat is a comedy series starring Randall Park, Constance Wu, Ian Chen, Hudson Yang, and Forrest Wheeler that is inspired by the life of chef and food personality Eddie Huang and his book Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir.
The story follows the course of Eddie Huang’s Taiwanese family as they make their way from Chinatown of Washington, D.C. to Orlando, Florida to open up a cowboy-themed steak restaurant in 1995. His mother struggles with the culture clash of her Chinese upbringing with a Florida community that doesn’t have a large Chinese population, his father embraces the “American Dream”, and Eddie struggles with assimilating into school. Eddie’s brothers are over-achievers, and have no problems fitting in.
The first of the two preview episodes garnered eight million viewers, becoming the second highest rated comedy premiere this season.

The storyboard was very graphic. We used a fat sharpie that Eddie Huang might have used on his binder notebook at school The animation style was really crude, to follow the voice of the illustration.
